Meet Your Guide
Logan Messina
I have been lucky enough to call the mountains of Western Maine my home for nearly a decade, but my story began where I grew up in Central New York. Ever since I was a kid, nature has been extremely important in my life. Many of my first adventures took place in the woods and streams around Syracuse, and it was there that I discovered what would become a life long passion for fishing.
After what I like to call my “quarter life crisis”, I moved from New York up to Maine. I had hoped to find community there, as well as work, adventure, and most importantly, peace in the outdoors. I was lucky enough to find everything I was looking for and more, and it all started with taking a job at Sugarloaf Mountain in the winter of 2018. It wasn’t long before I fell completely in love with Maine. My new friends convinced me to sign up for whitewater raft guide training that spring, and I went on to guide three full seasons. During that time I continued to grow my community, find adventure around every corner, and learn so much about myself. On the Kennebec, Penobscot and Dead Rivers I mastered reading and running rapids while balancing safety and professionalism. But even more importantly, I discovered how much I value being able to share my passion for the outdoors with others.
As I discovered my love of whitewater, I began exploring Western Maine’s rivers in search of fish. I saw that the more I learned about the way water behaves, the more fish I could find. I became committed to mastering fly-fishing techniques as well. I spent countless days scouting Maine’s rivers, lakes and ponds, and became obsessed with the fisheries here in Western Maine, specifically big native brook trout.
My commitment to the world of fishing only grew stronger when I began tying flies for the Rangeley Region Sport Shop in 2020. I have been tying commercially for them for 6 years now, time flies! Shortly after I started tying flies I was hired to work there, and realized that it would be possible to combine my love of fishing and my passion for sharing the outdoors with others, into my dream career. That winter, I passed my Maine Fishing Guide Exam, and the following summer, I started guiding. Since then, my guide business has grown beyond what I ever imagined, and I am so grateful for the community of Maine Guides that have made me feel right at home, and who have been so incredibly supportive throughout the journey.
I am so thankful that I get to do what I do, and if you are interested in a day of fishing in Maine I would love to take you out on the water! Over the years I have grown to know the ins and outs of many rivers and ponds throughout the Rangeley area, as well as the Kennebec River, and the West Branch of the Penobscot. These waters have so much to offer, but this area is known for being the last strong hold for native brook trout in the continental U.S., which is a special thing. I am so honored to be able to fish for these amazing, rare creatures, among so many other beautiful species. I hope you will be able to join me sometime!
